Organizations across all industries now get it, including healthcare. Effective ethics and compliance programs must include a confidential mechanism for reporting misconduct, something most organizations accomplish using third-party assistance. As the world's largest hotline provider, NAVEX Global has the world's largest and most comprehensive database of reports and outcomes. Our analysis of this data is published in our annual Ethics & Compliance Hotline Benchmark Report1.
Methodology
More than 2,100 of our clients received 10 or more reports in 2014 (representing 32 million employees) utilizing our Hotline and Case Management systems. That data, used to produce our benchmark report, covered 26 industries and 45 sub-groups including approximately 730,000 reports.
In this article, we will focus on the Healthcare Industry's two sub-groups: pharmaceuticals and healthcare providers ("providers"), which includes hospitals, doctors' offices, care clinics and urgent care centers. Selected data for the healthcare sub-groups versus all industries is provided in Figure 1.
Report Volume
The metric used routinely for report volume is "reports per 100 employees annually." In 2014, across all industries, the overall median rate was 1.3 reports per 100 employees. That represents a 44% increase over a five-year period. Interestingly, Providers top the list (fig. 2) with the highest rate - 2.3 reports per 100 employees, compared with 1.3 for Pharmaceuticals.
