An ethics investigation into the leadership of world soccer has led to the multi-year ban of two top officials.
Joseph S. “Sepp” Blatter, president of FIFA, and Michel Platini, vice president of FIFA and president of UEFA, have been banned for eight years from all soccer-related activities. Blatter was ordered to pay a fine of about $50,000. Platini was ordered to pay a fine of about $80,000.
The decision relates to an inquiry into Blatter signing off on a payment of about $2 million from FIFA to Platini.
In a statement released on Monday, a FIFA committee concluded that Blatter “violated his fiduciary duty to FIFA” and violated rules of conduct.
